What Is AI Visibility?

AI visibility measures how likely your website is to be discovered, understood, and cited by AI-powered search engines and assistants. Unlike traditional SEO, which optimizes for Google blue links, AI visibility optimizes for inclusion in generated answers, summaries, and recommendations produced by systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews.

These AI systems use specialized crawlers to index the web. GPTBot powers ChatGPT's knowledge. ClaudeBot powers Anthropic's Claude. PerplexityBot feeds Perplexity's real-time search. Google-Extended covers Gemini and Google AI Overviews. If these crawlers cannot access your site, or if your content lacks the structured signals AI systems rely on, your brand simply will not appear in AI-generated answers — even if you rank #1 on traditional Google.

AI visibility is not replacing SEO. It is an additional layer. The fundamentals — great content, technical health, authority backlinks — still matter. But AI visibility adds new requirements: schema diversity, explicit E-E-A-T markers, AI crawler permissions, and emerging standards like llms.txt that did not exist three years ago.

The Five Dimensions We Check

1. AI Crawler Access (20 points)

We read your robots.txt file and check whether major AI crawlers are allowed or blocked. A site that blocks GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot scores poorly here — it is effectively invisible to the AI systems that matter most. We also check for blanket blocks that might inadvertently catch AI crawlers along with malicious bots.

2. Structured Data and Schema (20 points)

AI systems heavily rely on Schema.org markup to understand what a page is about, who wrote it, when it was published, and how it relates to other content. We check for Article schema, FAQ schema, Organization schema, Breadcrumb schema, and overall schema diversity. Sites with rich, valid schema are far more likely to be accurately cited.

3. Content Quality Signals (20 points)

AI systems favor substantive, well-structured content. We check content depth (word count), heading structure, title tags, meta descriptions, and canonical tags. Thin pages with no headings and minimal text rarely get cited. Pages with clear hierarchy, comprehensive coverage, and proper technical markup score higher.

4. E-E-A-T Signals (20 points)

Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness are critical for AI citation decisions. We check for author bylines, publication dates, About pages, contact information, and social media profiles. AI systems are trained to be cautious — they prefer citing sources that clearly demonstrate who is behind the content and why they are credible.

5. AI-Specific Readiness (20 points)

This dimension checks emerging standards and practices specifically for AI systems. Does your site have an llms.txt file? Is your sitemap referenced in robots.txt? Do you have diverse schema types covering different content formats? These are the forward-looking signals that will matter more as AI search matures.

Use Cases by Role

SEO Agencies

Pitch AI visibility as a new service line. Most clients have never heard of GPTBot or llms.txt. Run their site through this tool and you instantly have a concrete report with specific fixes. It differentiates you from agencies still selling "page 1 rankings" as the only metric.

Content Teams

Understand whether your content structure supports AI citation. Are your articles marked up with Article schema? Do they have author bylines and publication dates? Is your FAQ content wrapped in FAQPage schema? These small technical changes dramatically increase citation probability.

Marketing Leaders

Track AI visibility as a new KPI alongside traditional organic traffic. As AI search adoption grows, the sites that invested early in AI visibility will capture disproportionate share of voice. Use this tool monthly to benchmark progress and justify investment.

Business Owners

If you rely on organic traffic for leads or sales, AI visibility is becoming as important as Google rankings. This tool gives you a quick health check with specific actions you can take yourself or hand to your developer. No SEO expertise required to understand the results.

Why Traditional SEO Is Not Enough

Traditional SEO optimizes for ranking factors in Google's algorithm: backlinks, keyword density, page speed, mobile usability. These still matter. But AI search engines use different signals to decide what to cite. They do not have a "SERP" in the traditional sense — they generate answers by synthesizing information from multiple sources.

When ChatGPT answers a question, it decides which sources to reference based on: how well the content answers the specific question, whether the source is authoritative on the topic, how recently the content was published, and whether the source has clear authorship and trust signals. A page that ranks #8 on Google might be cited by ChatGPT while the #1 result is ignored, if the #8 page has better structured data and clearer expertise signals.

The AI Visibility Checker bridges this gap. It evaluates the signals that specifically matter for AI citation, separate from traditional ranking factors. Use it alongside your existing SEO tools for a complete picture of your search presence.
