Frequently Asked Questions

What is an XML sitemap and why do I need one?
An XML sitemap is a file that lists all the important pages on your website, helping search engines discover and index your content more efficiently. It includes metadata like when each page was last updated, how often it changes, and how important it is relative to other pages. While not required, a sitemap significantly improves indexation for new sites, large sites, and sites with complex navigation.
How does this sitemap generator work?
Enter your website URL and select crawl depth and page limit. Our tool crawls your site starting from the homepage, follows internal links, and discovers pages up to your configured limits. For each page, it extracts the title, detects the page type, auto-assigns changefreq and priority scores, and flags any issues like broken links or noindex pages. Finally, it generates a validated XML sitemap and a visual tree diagram.
What is changefreq auto-detection?
Changefreq tells search engines how often a page is likely to change. Our tool auto-detects this based on page type: homepage and news pages get "daily", blog posts and product pages get "weekly", static pages like About and Contact get "monthly", and archived content gets "yearly". You can customize these values before downloading.
How does priority scoring work?
Priority scores (0.0 to 1.0) tell search engines which pages are most important on your site. Our scoring algorithm considers three factors: depth from homepage (closer = higher), internal link count (more links = higher), and page type (homepage = 1.0, category = 0.8, blog post = 0.6). The result is a balanced priority distribution across your site.
How do I submit a sitemap to Google?
After generating your sitemap, download the XML file and upload it to your website root directory (e.g., yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml). Then go to Google Search Console, select your property, navigate to Sitemaps, enter the URL of your sitemap, and click Submit. Google will then crawl and index the pages listed in your sitemap.
What pages are excluded automatically?
Our crawler automatically excludes non-HTML assets (images, CSS, JS, PDFs), external links, pages blocked by robots.txt, and pages with noindex meta tags. You can also configure max crawl depth and max pages to further limit the scope.
Is this tool free?
Yes, 100% free with no signup. You can crawl up to 500 pages per sitemap and generate up to 5 sitemaps per day.
How many pages can it crawl?
You can configure the crawl from 10 to 500 pages. The default is 100 pages with a max depth of 3 levels from the homepage. For larger sites, consider using a desktop tool like Screaming Frog or a paid service.
Can I customize changefreq and priority?
Yes. After the crawl completes, you can review and edit changefreq and priority values for any page before generating the final XML. The visual tree also lets you see how priority is distributed across your site.
Does it detect broken links?
Yes. During the crawl, any page that returns a 404, 500, or other error status is flagged in the Issues panel. Redirects (301/302) are also noted so you can update your internal links.
Does it work for large websites?
The free version supports up to 500 pages, which covers most small to medium websites. For enterprise sites with thousands of pages, you may need a desktop crawler or a paid service. The tool works well for blogs, small business sites, portfolios, and SaaS platforms.
Does theStacc manage sitemaps automatically?
Yes. Stacc's platform can automatically generate, validate, and submit sitemaps to Google Search Console as part of its SEO automation suite. After generating your sitemap here, consider starting a trial to automate ongoing sitemap management.
