Someone finally decides to do something about it. She opens the map at nine in the evening, taps three gyms, and looks for the same things every time: what the floor actually looks like, whether the equipment is modern, the rating, and whether the place has posted anything since last year. Your gym is friendlier and better kept. None of that is visible from a phone.
You already know the profile needs work. But you were covering a class, then a member wanted to talk about freezing their membership, then the rower needed fixing, and the photos on your listing are still the ones from the refurbishment three years ago.
So the big-box place with a marketing department takes the enquiries, and you get yours from members bringing friends. That works until it does not: churn does not care that you are busy, and every month you do not replace what leaves, the numbers go the wrong way quietly.
Then January arrives, you finally have a reason to care about marketing, and you discover the gyms above you on the map have been building that position since the summer.
